Background The Ambient Group has always promoted staff empowerment and upliftment (especially Previously Disadvantaged Individuals) and decided in 1999 to formalise the empowerment policies and formed an entity called A.B.E. Contracting Services (Pty) Limited. Objectives and long term goal Initially formed as a Close Corporation in May 1999, ABE was converted to a private company in November 2001 in order to facilitate an equity participation programme. Recruitment into ABE will be predominantly previously disadvantaged individuals, however, we will not compromise our standards and service levels, therefore we are of the opinion that progress/advancement and entry into ABE will be based on merit and qualifications. Every attempt will be made to advance or empower individuals from the previously disadvantaged communities. Training and coaching, ranging from an informal to tertiary level is available to all staff who reflect the potential and desire for future advancement. We firmly believe that by empowering by ownership and sharing common goals and objectives is our way of achieving success and prosperity. This is the challenge we as a company in a highly competitive market need to overcome. Social responsibility While we believe that charity starts from home, we have identified the great need for contributions to the country at large. Our participation thus far :- Annual donations to: Cotlands Baby Sanctuary Little Eden Society for the mentally handicapped Association of foot and mouth painters SOS children’s villages Salvation Army SA Guide Dog Association for the Blind Other contributions and plans Ceiling installation to a church in Soweto Ceiling installation to a temple in Lenasia Contributions to Cripple Care Involved in a joint venture with a supplier, where we install chalkboards to schools in the Natal Midlands By 2010 we hope to have a bursary programme in place for Black students who want to enter the building industry Health and safety Our staff are all issued with required clothing and equipment to execute their work in a clean and safe environment. Staff are selected on a regular basis to attend safety courses in order to educate colleagues on site to exercise caution. Our zero casualty record bears testimony to this end.
